Salt: Evidence that says you should spice up your life!

For years, we have been led to believe that too much salt is bad for us

The American government has been doing its best to get people to reduce their salt intake; however, this claim has very little scientific basis. Recently, a study was performed on more than 6000 subjects and there was no evidence to support that limiting salt intake would reduce the risk of death, strokes and heart attacks.

In 1984, a study involving 52 research centers around the world, revealed that there was no link between hypertension and the intake of sodium. Furthermore, it was shown that people who consumed double the amount of salt had a lower average blood pressure than the people who consumed half the amount of sodium.

It can be said that this paranoia started in France back in 1904. Some doctors in that country linked hypertension to six patients who apparently consumed salt in excess.

Another doctor tested this theory on rats by giving them an amount of sodium each day. He also claimed that people living in Japan where high salt eaters, and they had an abnormally high rate of high blood pressure. In reality, high blood pressure is linked to certain cultural factors and genetics. That said, the hype was so intense that in America, the government did everything that it could to get American citizens to lower their salt intake by as much as 85%.

In 2004 a meta analysis was conducted by the Cochrane Collaboration, and it was discovered that reducing salt intake had a small effect on the blood pressure of people who were in good health. Readings dropped by 0.6 mmHg. Put another way, readings went from 120/80 to 119/79.6.
